["Strong Wind Derails Train, Leaving More Than 30 Casualties in NW China" - Xinhua headline]
Urumqi, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) - A task force from the Ministry of Railways is heading for the scene of a train derailment in northwest China's Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region early Wednesday.
Sent by Minister Liu Zhijun, the team led by deputy minister Hu Yadong is rushing to the scene to guide rescue efforts and deal with the aftermath of the accident.
The Urumqi-Aksu train (No 5806/5807) was hit by gusts and 11 of its 19 cars derailed at about 2:00 a.m. when it was running between Zhenzhuquan and Hongshanqu substations, about 20 to 30 km away from the Turpan station. The Urumqi Railway Bureau said the three passengers died and 34 others were injured in the accident, including two in serious condition. But sources from the scene put the death toll at four.
All injured passengers have been hospitalized in nearby hospitals, rescuers said.
The derailment disrupted the Southern Xinjiang Railway for about nine hours.
It was gusts rather than a sand storm that hit the train, said Yang Guiming, chief forecaster at the Central Meteorological Station, quoting reports from local weather stations.
The gusts were said to have a velocity of about 50 metres per second.
The derailment occurred said local railway bureau. [as received]
"A strong sand storm cracked window panes soon after the train left Turpan, and blew some of the cars off the rail when we were trying to plugging up the windows," said a passenger named Su Chuanyi, a local TV journalist.
"The first rescue team of more than 100 people, including doctors and police officers, arrived by 4:30 a.m. They are now working at the scene," Su said.
The mishap occurred near a windmill farm 120 km away from Urumqi. The area is well known for strong winds all the year round.
The Zhenzhuquan substation was attacked by a windstorm in April 2001, which derailed 11 cars of a train that stopped there.
