概述
芝加哥大学成立于公元1890年，校区位于芝加哥〈Chicago〉闹区，是全美最有名的10大私立学校之一。在学校草创初期，由于获得当时美国石油大王约翰?洛克斐勒〈John D Rockefeller〉的经济援助，让校园内部的软硬件规格在短短10年内便赶上了美国其它老字号大学的规格，再加上校园的地理位置就在美国的金融大镇—芝加哥，芝加哥大学在一创校后就成为美国人心目中的名校之一。
芝加哥大学本来是以成人教育起家，学校草创初期主要承办在职人事的回流教育与进修课程；然而，随着学校的名气大增，芝加哥大学的教育体系也跟着逐步完整。现在的芝加哥大学，在大学部与研究所有4个学院：生命科学院〈Biological Sciences Collegiate Division〉、人文学院〈Humanities Collegiate Division〉、应用科学院〈Physical Sciences collegiate Division〉与社会科学院〈Social Sciences Collegiate Division〉；在专业学校〈Professional schools〉有6个学院，分别为：神学院〈Divinity School〉、商学研究所〈Graduate School of Business〉、哈里斯公共政策研究所〈Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies〉、法学院〈Law school〉、普利兹克医学院〈Pritzker School of Medicine〉与社工学院〈School of Social Service Administration〉。
根据学校的官方网站，芝加哥大学在2002年共有12,830名在校生，而大学部的学生只有3,996位，只有全校学生的1/3；可见该校仍以研究人才的培训为主体。而富于创意、弹性的课程与多元化的研究机会是成就芝加哥大学成为名校的原因。
在学期上课时数方面，芝加哥大学属于学季制〈Quarter〉，一学年共有4个学季，一季差不多只有10个星期的上课时间。除了学季制以外，校方为了方便校内学生能够尽可能早点修毕所有学分，又特别打出全年无休课程制度，该校每周的第一堂课由星期六的8点开始到星期五的晚上10点结束，不论周末或者一般上课日，校园内的教学活动都不会受到影响。
另外，在大学部课程安排方面，校方采取基础与专业课程分离的认证政策。对于刚进入大学的新鲜人，在大一大二时必须修毕校方所指定的所有通识课程学分〈General Education courses〉；而在修完指定的通识时数后，学生在大三大四可以依自己的兴趣与期望，专攻校方所提供的50个领域的专业课程〈Concentrations〉，而学生在日后所获得的校方文凭认定，就是根据他们在大学后两年所专攻的专业领域。
在研究生方面，校方提供相当多的学术研究机会，而多数的学术研究机会都来自校方与民间企业的合作。近年来，芝加哥大学校方致力将学术研究的风气推广到大学部，而校方也在近年来提出越来越多的大学部学生研究学程。不过，大学部的学术研究学程目前还局限于商学院或理工学院，文学院与社会科学院的大学部课程仍以课堂教学为取向。
