台湾的陈水扁将不对反对党罢免案提出书面辩驳 (Taiwan's Chen Will Not Issue Rebuttal to Opposition's Recall Motion)

台湾总统陈水扁决定不对反对党提出的罢免运动提出书面辩驳。总统助理表示，陈水扁将于星期二晚上对台湾人民发表一场电视演说。助理们说，陈水扁在演说中将着重谈论他的政绩，而不会对他的家人贪污腐败的传闻做出评论。

台湾立法院将从星期三开始辩论反对党提出的一项动议。动议将授权进行有关罢免陈水扁总统的全民公决。反对党说，由于陈水扁的夫人、女婿和高级助理涉及金融丑闻，陈水扁已经无法获得人民的信任。目前没有证据显示陈水扁本人直接涉及这些丑闻。

Taiwan President Chen Shui-bian has decided not to issue a written rebuttal to an opposition campaign to recall him from office. Presidential aides say Mr. Chen will instead deliver a televised address to the people of Taiwan Tuesday evening. They say he will focus on his accomplishments in office and will not comment on allegations of corruption by members of his family.

Taiwan's parliament is to begin debating Wednesday an opposition motion that would authorize a national referendum on removing Mr. Chen from office. Opposition parties say he cannot be trusted because of alleged financial wrongdoing by his wife, son-in-law and senior aides. Mr. Chen has not been directly implicated in the scandals.
