In 1987 the Soviet Union celebrated with martial splendor the seventieth anniversary of the October Revolution. Communism was stil described as the wave of the future. Within four years, this great empire had disintegrated; communism stood discredited. In the first instance, the Soviet Union's collapse represented the downfall of a secular religion. Communism joined the gods that had failed. Economically, moreover, the Soviet system turned out to be inefficient, unable to adapt to change.
