Mobile phones affecting protein expression
This intriguing study, on short-term ERK activation by electromagnetic fields at the frequencies of mobile phones, features in the Hidden Jewels list for All of Biology, and has recently been evaluated by two F1000 Biology Faculty Members. Richard Naftalin, of the Physiology Faculty, had this to say:
\"This fascinating paper clearly demonstrates for the first time that microwaves emitted at the frequency and energy levels of mobile phones rapidly activate HeLa cell membrane NADH oxidase to release reactive oxygen species (ROS).\" [see full evaluation]
Alex Toker, a Faculty Member in the Cell Biology faculty, commented:
\"Whether these findings translate into physiological or even pathological effects by mobile phone electromagnetic fields remains to be determined, but it certainly gives one food for thought considering the millions of mobile phones in use throughout the world.\" |
