Synopsis
The 8th edition is suggested for initial purchase by Brandon/Hill. Rosai (National Cancer Institute, Milan, Italy and Weill Medical College of Cornell U., New York), with the help of contributing authors for five of the chapters, has carried out a monumental task in compiling a new edition of this textbook and reference (Ackerman passed away in 1993). After initial chapters discussing gross and special techniques, the subsequent 28 chapters are devoted to the specialities, including those for skin, oral cavity and oropharynx, mandible and maxilla, respiratory tract, mediastrinum, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, gastrointestinal tract, soft tissues, spleen, and ear. Each chapter includes color illustrations of gross and microscopic views and exhaustive bibliographies. Appendices contain current guidelines in quality control and methods for handling specimens, ADASP position papers, tumor staging, and standardized methods for reporting. All of the illustrations are presented in slide format on the included CD-ROMs. Annotation ?004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Reviewer: Wendy M. Recant, MD (University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description:This is the eighth edition of what has come to be regarded as the gold standard text for the practice of diagnostic surgical pathology. Expanded by almost a third since the 1989 edition, the current work provides a wealth of new information relevant to diagnosis and prognosis of a variety of diseases.
Purpose:The purpose in presenting this new edition is to make available new information and to provide expanded coverage of special techniques in immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular pathology that may be of diagnostic or prognostic significance in the routine practice of surgical pathology.
Audience:Although the book is written primarily for the practitioner of surgical pathology, it also serves as an excellent reference for pathology residents and trainees in a variety of surgical disciplines.
Features:The current edition includes more than 1000 new illustrations, almost a third of which are reproduced for the first time in color, and adds new sections on guidelines for pathology reporting and quality assurance issues relating to the practice of surgical pathology. Expanded tabular presentation of diagnostic features, including those dealing with cytogenetic and molecular data, are especially useful.
Assessment:This new edition is a worthy successor to prior versions. It more than meets the author's objectives to provide in an exceptionally usable form, information on advances in diagnostic technology and new concepts of disease mechanisms that are relevant to the practice of surgical pathology.
