The Psychologist's Book of Personality Tests. By Louis JANDA. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., New York, 2001, 209 pages, $12.95, softcover. ISBN 0-471-37102-5.

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED why others get promoted over you? Why your best efforts go unappreciated? This book, written by a psychologist, is designed to help you understand and overcome the barriers to leading a more meaningful and effective life.

It includes 24 self-administered tests logically ordered to provide the reader with self-awareness regarding topics ranging across the whole panorama of human emotions. It is divided into three sections. Section 1 is a series of eight tests designed to help identify the behaviors and attitudes holding us back from achieving our personal best. They rate selfesteem, anxiety, depression, behavior, personal beliefs, impulsive behavior, body-self relations, and worry, in that order. These tests measure moods, attitudes and emotions.

Section 2 deals with the barriers that we place between others and ourselves. Again there are eight tests that rate personal ability in such topics as friendliness, assertiveness, fear of intimacy, control/domination, anger, trust, romance and sexual guilt. The author contends that the goal of functional individuals should be to express themselves openly and honestly, not only with loved ones but also with strangers and acquaintances.

The tests in the first two sections are designed to highlight deficits. Exposing deficits to the light can be the first step to higher self-awareness. The tests in Section 3 are designed to measure selfawareness. These tests actually measure the traits that make dynamic, successful people different from people with problems. They are designed to reveal strengths and qualities that can be used to excel at what life has to offer. Topics here explore abilities and include turning bad moods around, self-efficacy, hardiness, thriving, empathy, and comfort level with mortality, new experiences, and joy.

Each test is followed with a thorough commentary by the author. He explains research into the topic and the genesis of the test itself, providing excellent perspective for the testtaker. As these are all tests used by professional psychologists, each one is scored and the scores are compared to a \"norm chart,\" which is provided with each test. This enables testtakers to compare their norms with the original or revised subject groups.

The author's informal writing style makes fairly difficult subject matter easy to comprehend. It flows in a logical and well-thought-out format, which readers can choose to follow or not; certainly the tests need not be taken in order. After reading the book and taking many of the tests, I won't say that I found many startling epiphanies. But I will say that the tests and the commentaries did help me to hone in on strengths and deficits. I can even see how two people might both use it to resolve or understand differences between them. I see this book as a must-have for guidance counselors, human relations personnel, therapists, and anyone desiring to improve their interpersonal skills and live more effectively. For anyone using psychological testing it is a rich resource.
